South Carolina
South Carolina brings me to Myrtle Beach, a place we went up to every year for a kickboxing competition called the IKF. My dad was a professional kickboxer and is now a coach, so these trips were a regular thing for us. I was about 19 and helping coach some of our fighters, and this was one of the first times I ever brought a film camera along. It was during this trip that I really started taking my camera out on my own, walking around and photographing the area. It was quite beautiful, and since it was a slower time of year, there weren't many people around. I think these pictures have a real nostalgic look to them. This was also before I started using professional labs to scan my film, so they look a little different from some of my other projects you've seen. They've got a softer, rougher quality to them since I was scanning at home on an Epson scanner. I'm really proud of these photos. They're some of my oldest, me as a younger man before I'd fully grown into my style, but I feel like you can see it starting to come through. I like Myrtle Beach, but it's not my favorite place I've ever been.
