Colombia

This trip came together because of an old friend. A high school classmate, now a wedding photographer herself, asked me to come document her wedding in Santa Marta, and what started as one job turned into a week of documenting everything around it too, the days before and after, the city itself, and the life happening in between. This body of work isn't the wedding. It's everything else. A catamaran trip out on the water, long walks through the streets of Santa Marta, the kind of wandering that only happens when you're somewhere new with nowhere you have to be. My girlfriend came along, and a lot of what's here is simply the two of us moving through the trip together. The weather was beautiful, if a little unforgiving. July heat like I hadn't experienced before, but it never took away from how gorgeous the place was or how genuinely good the people we met along the way were. Getting to be there for a friend, to hand her something meaningful on one of the biggest days of her life, meant more to me than I expected going in. And being in the middle of a city built around a cathedral that's stood since the 1700s hit differently too, especially as I've been on my own path toward becoming Catholic. Photographing it, and just being in it, felt like more than work. It felt like something I was supposed to see. I feel genuinely blessed to have gotten to experience Santa Marta the way I did.
